Lifeguard Course
The City of Powell will be periodically offering American Red Cross Lifeguarding. This certification is necessary to be employed as a Lifeguard at the Powell Aquatic Center. If you are interested, please call to be added to an interest list.
The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training is a professional, state of the art course that leads to certification in Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. This course will equip participants with the skills and technical knowledge to become effective members of an aquatic facility team. The training is $120.
Pre-Requisite Swim Test is required to continue course: you must be able to swim 300 meters: 100 front crawl, 100 breaststroke, and 100 of either front crawl or breaststroke. Then swim 20 meters using either front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive at least 10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound brick, swim back 20 meters to the starting point with the brick and exit the water without a ladder or steps within 1 minute 40 seconds.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course
The City of Powell will be offering American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor in December 2011. This certification is necessary to be instruct swimming lessons at the Powell Aquatic Center. If these dates won't work for you, call to be added to an interest list.
Successful candidates will receive their Fundamentals of Instruction and Water Safety Instructor certifications. Participants must be 16 years old.
Pre-Requisite Swim Test is required to begin course: you must be able to swim 25 yards each of front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke and 15 yards of the butterfly. Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (by floating or sculling). Tread water for 1 minute.

Registration Deadline is the Friday prior to the first lesson.
All American Red Cross lessons include a combination of stroke work and water safety. There will be a small portion of time each lesson devoted to water safety.

Level 4: Stroke Improvement
Level 5: Stroke Refinement
Level 6: Swimming & Skill Proficiency, choose from either Personal Water Safety or Fitness Swimmer.
Private & Semi Private Lessons are available year round.
Water Babies & Water Kids: program for infants and preschool children (6 months through 3 years), that will promote water safety, aquatic adjustment and swimming readiness to become comfortable in and around the water so they are ready to learn to swim.

Turtles & Fishes: A first time opportunity for the child to take swimming lessons without their parent or guardian in the water with them. This class focus is on teaching basic water skills and safety in the water. The child must be able to separate from their parents or guardians and remain comfortable in the water.
Turtles: is designed for the beginner. Children learn the basic skills of breath control through blowing bubbles, underwater exploration, floating, kicking, basic beginner strokes (with assistance), and water safety.
Cost Members $25, Non-Members $30
Fishes: is for children who are already comfortable in the water. Primary skills are taught for greater confidence in the water. Students learn to retrieve objects underwater, unsupported gliding and floating, performing combined strokes on the front and back, as well as rhythmic breathing.

Aqua Step is a fantastic aerobic activity that adds variety to an exercise routine. Aqua Step incorporates the dance element of traditional aerobics with stepping on a platform. This class is for any age, size or fitness level and can be undertaken by swimmers and non-swimmers alike.
Cost: $25 for Members, $40 for Non-members, and $5 for drop-in class rate.
AQuawonDo brings the martial art of TaeKwonDo to the pool. This total body workout is both mental and physical working on strength and balance. This class is in held in both shallow and deep water so participants must be comfortable in the water, but do not need any prior knowledge of TaeKwonDo.
Cost: $25 for Members, $40 for Non-Members, and $5 for drop-in class rate.
Aqua Dance brings the fun of dancing to the water. By adding a level of resistance training while decreasing the impact on joints participants of all dancing abilities will be able to enjoy this intense workout. Aqua Dance takes place in shallow water so participants of all swimming abilities will be able to participate.
Cost: $25 for Members, $40 for Non-Members, and $5 for drop-in class rate.
Swimming for Adults will teach the fundamentals of swimming. Participants will be introduced to each of the following strokes throughout the course: free, backstroke, breaststroke, and fly. Throughout the course participants will focus on technique and increasing comfort in the water.
Cost: $25 for Members, $40 for Non-Members and $5 for drop-in class rate.
Aqua Motion: an aerobic exercise class that uses the natural resistance of water to increase strength and cardio endurance while protecting the joints. Aqua Motion takes place in deep water so participants need to be comfortable in the water. Aqua belts will be provided.

Walking & Jogging Clubs: Take your walking routine into the pool to increase the resistance and get results even faster. Come in on Tuesday & Thursday and walk upstream in the PAC’s continuous river to really feel the burn.
Hydro Fit: an aerobic exercise class that will focus on increasing participant strength and cardio endurance all while keeping your feet on the ground. Hydro Fit takes place in shallow water so participants of all swimming levels, including none, can participate with ease.

Water Pilates: This class combines the principals of pilates with the benefits of water exercise. We will concentrate on exercises powered from the body core resulting in strengthening the core of the body, flexibility, and muscle strength while experiencing elongation and the fluidity of water.
